7 Days in Northwest Yunnan: exploring diverse ethnic culture

After breakfast, we'll visit Dali Ancient Town, a well-preserved historic area surrounded by mountains and traditional Bai architecture. The town’s stone streets, old courtyards, and local markets reflect the region’s long history as a meeting point between different cultures.

Continue to Chongsheng Temple and Three Pagodas, one of Yunnan’s most recognizable historical landmarks. Built more than 1,000 years ago, the pagodas represent the religious and artistic achievements of the ancient Nanzhao and Dali Kingdoms.

In the afternoon, explore local Muslim cultural areas and enjoy halal cuisine. Dali has a long-established Hui Muslim community, and travelers can discover local halal restaurants and everyday Muslim life in the city.

Travel from Dali to Lijiang, stopping at Xizhou Ancient Town along the way.

Return to Lijiang in the afternoon and spend time exploring local streets or enjoying the atmosphere of the old town.

Travel north from Lijiang to Shangri-La, entering the Tibetan Plateau region of Northwest Yunnan.

The journey offers changing landscapes, from valleys and forests to highland grasslands and snow-covered mountains. Shangri-La, formerly known as Zhongdian, is famous for its Tibetan culture, traditional villages, and peaceful natural surroundings.

After arrival, visit Songzanlin Monastery, the largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan. The monastery is an important cultural site where visitors can learn about Tibetan architecture, religious traditions, and local history.
