Travel from Lhasa to Shigatse, Sakya and Gyantse, exploring centuries-old Tibetan culture.
Detailed Itinerary
Welcome to Lhasa, the spiritual and cultural center of Tibet. Upon arrival, your local guide and driver will meet you and transfer you to your hotel.
The first day is arranged at a relaxed pace to help you adjust to the high altitude. Lhasa sits at approximately 3,650 meters above sea level, and allowing your body time to adapt is an important part of enjoying Tibet comfortably.
After settling into your hotel, take a gentle walk around the city and experience the unique atmosphere of the Tibetan capital. Traditional Tibetan buildings, prayer flags and local markets create a fascinating introduction to plateau life.
After breakfast, begin your Lhasa exploration with the world-famous Potala Palace. Built on a hill overlooking Lhasa, the Potala Palace was once the winter residence of the Dalai Lamas and remains one of Tibet’s greatest cultural symbols. Inside the palace, visitors can admire ancient murals, religious treasures and traditional Tibetan architecture.
Continue to Jokhang Temple, the spiritual heart of Tibet. The surrounding Barkhor Street has been an important pilgrimage route for centuries and offers an opportunity to observe Tibetan religious traditions and daily life.
In the afternoon, explore local streets and markets to gain a deeper understanding of modern Tibetan culture.
Leave Lhasa and travel west toward Shigatse, Tibet’s second-largest city and an important historical center.
Upon arrival in Shigatse, visit Tashilhunpo Monastery. Founded in the 15th century, this monastery is one of Tibet’s most important religious institutions and the traditional seat of the Panchen Lama. The complex features impressive prayer halls, historic artworks and the famous giant Maitreya Buddha statue.
Shigatse is also one of the best places in Tibet to learn about the region’s diverse communities and cultural connections.
After breakfast, travel to Sakya, one of Tibet’s most historically significant towns.
Visit Sakya Monastery, founded in the 11th century and known as the center of the Sakya school of Tibetan Buddhism.
Unlike many Tibetan monasteries decorated with bright colors and golden roofs, Sakya Monastery resembles an ancient fortress with grey walls and unique architectural features. Inside, visitors can see valuable scriptures, traditional murals and historical collections preserved for centuries.
Continue to Gyantse, a charming historic town located along an ancient trade route between Tibet, India and Nepal.
Start the day with a visit to Palcho Monastery, one of Tibet’s most unique religious sites. The monastery is famous for the Kumbum Stupa, a remarkable structure containing hundreds of chapels decorated with Buddhist sculptures and murals. It reflects the artistic achievements and religious traditions of medieval Tibet.
After exploring Gyantse, drive back toward Lhasa. Along the way, enjoy views of Tibetan villages, wide valleys and snow-covered mountains.
Compared with Everest Base Camp routes, this journey offers a more relaxed experience while still allowing travelers to discover Tibet’s history and landscapes.
After breakfast, transfer to Lhasa airport or railway station for your onward journey.
Before departure, enjoy your final moments in Tibet, remembering the ancient monasteries, mountain landscapes and cultural experiences from this Muslim-friendly Tibet journey.
